Breeding By Type
Over a number of years we have developed our breeding program to consist of four types: white, blue, red and purple tags. Each type is comprised of sheep with particular traits which are measured, classed and allocated based on their micron, body type and genetic background. In order to achieve our breeding goals we both line and cross breed within these four types.
Red, blue and purple tag types are used as balancing tools within our medium wool stud. Blue tag types are joined like to like to stamp in traits. Red and purple tags are complimentarily joined to use their strong traits to balance the breeding program. White tags are generally joined as a seperate group to develop quality, dual purpose, fine wool Poll Merinos.
Having these different types within our stud has provided the tools for us develop a well balanced, Poll Merino, that produces both meat and wool in quality and quantity. It is also a way of utilising the diverse genetic background that has been developed throughout the studs 60+ years of breeding history.
White Tags
White tags are the fine/medium wool sheep within our stud that are derived from ‘One Oak No.2’. These sheep are bred for whiter wool and to handle higher rainfall.
White tags are further broken down into smaller groups within our data system including: Fine syndicates (F Syn), Special Fines (Sp F), Special Fine Elite (Sp F E), Special Fine Frame (Sp F F), Special Fine Heavy (Sp F H).
Blue Tags
Blue tags are the true medium wool sheep within One Oak Poll. They are our main line of medium wool, Riverina type Poll sheep. These sheep are dual purpose animals aiming to cut 8+kg of 20 micron wool. Blue taggers are bred like to like to suit our environment and are suitable for sheep-wheat regions across Australia.
Blue tag types are further broken down into smaller groups within our data system including: Medium Syndicates (M Syn), Special Medium (Sp M), Special Medium Elite (Sp M E), Special Medium Heavy (Sp M H).
Red Tags
Red tags are the stronger, heavier cutting end of our stud. They are bigger and more robust in type, leaning towards a South Australian genetic background. Red tags are bred as a tough and productive dual purpose animal and are further broken down into two groups: Strong (S) and Special Strong (Sp S).
Purple Tags
Purple Tags are the ‘wool sheep’ within our stud that are slightly later maturing; often the most productive in their 3rd, 4th and 5th years of life. They are more compact in body type, with richer and heavier medium wools.
Purple tags are mostly joined to our largest frame and free growing rams.
These are further broken down into two groups: Purple (P) and Special Purples (Sp P).
